    We are pleased to have a presentation on AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) at our next HE`E Planning Meeting. AVID is a nonprofit that changes lives by helping schools shift to a more equitable, student-centered approach to teaching and learning. Nationwide, AVID trains 80,000 educators annually to close the opportunity gap, so we can prepare all students for college, careers, and life. In Hawaii AVID partners with 110 public schools and trains 500+ educators at our Hawaii summer training. AVID also provides complex area and site based professional learning opportunities.

    Annette Murray is the AVID Hawaii Program Manager and will be leading the presentation. She lives in Kaneohe with her husband and twins, who attend public school. She has worked in K-12.

    Parking is available at neighboring parking lots (Whole Foods and Ward Village Shops parking lots). In addition, Impact Hub HNL parking is located on Kawaiahao behind the main entrance on Queen Street. Parking is available M-F from 6am-8:30pm. After you park, walk toward Queen St., enter through the “Commercial Plaza” entrance, and take the elevator to the first floor. Validated parking will be provided.

    HIDA also has an upcoming workshop featuring clinician, developmental cognitive neuroscientist and educator Joanna Christodoulou, EdD. Please see flyer here

    On May 14th, HE`E members were able to meet with HIDOE’s State Superintendent, Dr. Christina Kishimoto and her team, discussing the Department’s next 10-year Strategic Plan.     The Harold K.L Castle Foundation, Hawai`i Community Foundation, Daniel K. Inouye Institute, Hawai`i Pacific Health and Kamehameha Schools is sponsoring “Leveling the Playing Field, Helping Poor Children to Succeed: A Conversation with Geoffrey Canada,” founder of the Harlem Children’s Zone.     We are pleased to welcome staff from the DOE to present an update on their School-Based Medicaid Program. HE`E has also been participating in SCR81, a Senate Concurrent Resolution that requests the establishment of a working group to examine how the DOE can maximize Medicaid reimbursement for support services offered to eligible students during school hours.
