Agenda

Objective: To discuss community involvement with ESEA Flexibility Waiver and make recommendations for a working group. To discuss putting together action list for schools to improve family-school partnerships and form a working group. To discuss the possibly of hosting a forum bringing together folks from education, human services and the judicial system to discuss how to help children stay in the school system, and form a working group.

 

9:10-9:30 Update on ESEA Flexibility –STRIVE HI

Cheri updated the group on the STRIVE HI Performance System (ESEA Flexibility) status. DOE is looking to put together an outreach plan to the community about the new system as well as other important DOE Initiatives.  The group would be able to give input on what effective communication for the community.  Sign-up sheet available for workgroup.

 

9:30-9:50 List for Schools to Improve Family School Partnerships

Gordon Miyamoto explained about the Family School Partnership Initiative taking place in the Castle Complex. The Castle Complex Community Council is partnering with Family Hui and P-3 on priorities, strategies and actions to promote family-school partnerships in the Complex.  Kerrie Urosevich of Family Hui will be presenting at the next HE’E Quarterly Meeting on June 5, 2013 to present some of her work.  HE’E Staff has mentioned to the DOE about putting together a simple list for schools to help engage families. The work that Castle and Family Hui have done may inform this list of actions schools could do. Sign-up sheet available for workgroup.

 

9:50-10:10 Discussion on possible Forum to help Students Stay in School

Cheri introduced idea of hosting a forum to bring together folks from education, DOH, DHS, justice system to discuss how to keep kids in school. HE’E has been working to understand the efforts at the Department, but also is learning about the issues that face kids in family court. A forum could bring together people from the “front end” and “back end” to come up with possible platform for action. Sign up sheet available for workgroup.

 

 

10:10-10:30 Update on meeting with USDOE Office of Civil Rights

 

Cheri briefed the group on the visit from US Department of Education Office of Civil Rights attorney Tim Sell. Office is specifically looking for examples of discrimination based on race, gender and disability. Contact information for USDOE OCR was provided.
