9:10-9:30 Update on FS Partnership Initiative-List for Schools
Cheri updated group on the background of the project and the current status. Vanessa Ott commented that while the list of actions were good, it would be overwhelming to send all the information to DOE without a more thought out plan. Instead, we might focus on one or two items that could be done well. Kimberly Sepner-Sybournmy said that perhaps there is a way to tie in with schools’ accreditation. Karen Ginoza added that to have family-school partnerships tied with principals’ evaluation. Cheri confirmed with the group to target sending the cover letter to DOE and the simple list of actions as a start, and mention to DOE that this HE‘E initiative is a work in progress and that we plan to continue to give input.
9:30-9:50 Update on Social Justice –Keiki Caucus
Cheri updated group on the background of the social justice ad hoc group. One idea staff had to gather stakeholders together to identify common themes and priorities to see if collective advocacy for legislation might be possible. Group thought it was a good idea. They suggested reaching out to groups such as Adult Friends for Youth, Air Force Youth Challenge, YMCA, City Prosecutor’s office to start the conversation.
9:50-10:10 Legislative ideas
- Family School Leave
- PCNC-Funding
- Corey Rosenleeintroduced idea for legislation to guarantee air conditioning—law in Guam saying that rooms shall not be hotter than x degrees. Currently, even if school is able to obtain air conditioner, the cost to run the air conditioner is so high that schools will not support. Ongoing problem of funding for education
