Update from Members

Ann Davis gave an update on progress of parent workshops in Kailua/Kalaheo complex. 5 areas of focus:

  1. Effective family/school communication
  2. Beyond Bullying: Growing Safe Schools
  3. Hawaii 5210 Let’ Go! Power up with Sleep and Breakfast
  4. Smooth Transitions from Elementary to Middle School
  5. Creative Reading Solutions

 

Christina Simmons gave an update on progress of community progress in Ka‘u, Keahou and Pahoa complex.  She has done work with the community leaders and next step is to bring community to schools.

 

Jacob Karasik from Teach for America introduced himself. He is Manager of Alumni Affairs at Teach For America Hawai’i.  TFA would like to have teachers be more involved in community.  Group was excited to have TFA a part of HE‘E.

 

Cheri gave introductions and spoke about the following issues:

  1. Communication-work with DOE PR
  2. DOE Strategic Plan-keeping up with BOE

 

  1. Family School Partnership-CSSS

 

Gordon Miyamoto gave an update on Department’s plan to incorporate family school partnerships. A non-Race to the Top project (with project manager) has been formed to incorporate family/community engagement within system.  Project is being managed by Office of Curriculum, Instruction and Student Support.   May tie in with new Resolution on Family Engagement (SCR79).

 

 

Quick Legislative Update

  1. SCR79 Family Engagement Policy

i.     HE‘E has made a request to Senator Tokuda and Representative Takumi to continue look at state-wide family engagement policy. New resolution will be introduced this session. Resolution asks for department to establish a statewide family engagement policy as well as monitor implementation.

  1. SB2545/HB1683 Earl y Education—

i.     Dave Tom distributed latest testimony for SB2545/HB1683. HE‘E conditionally supports the bills; still opposes elimination of Junior K unless a solid plan is in place. Further, Coalition stresses importance of sufficient communication efforts to parents who will be affected by change.

  1. SB2729/2527 Performance Management System
  2. SB2535/HB2007 Instructional Hours/Bell Schedule

i.     Coalition maintains recommendations to support both bills.
