HE’E Meeting with Dr. Malbert Smith 10/15/12

October 15, 2012 from 10:30am to 12:00pm at the Japanese Cultural Center:

Through the generous support of the Hawaii State Department of Education (DOE), HE’E is pleased to host a meeting with Malbert Smith III Ph.D.  Dr. Smith is president of Metametrics, an educational measurement and research organization. Together with co-founder and CEO A. Jackson Stenner, Ph.D., Dr. Smith created The Lexile Framework for Reading and The Quantile Framework for Mathematics.

Dr. Smith will be speaking about the Lexile scale, a coherent and consistent measurement scale essential to forecasting an individual’s growth toward goals and to delivering targeted intervention and enrichment in a P-20 educational system. A Lexile measure represents both the complexity of a text such as a book or article, and an individual’s reading ability.  Lexile measures include the variables of word frequency and sentence length. Of note, Drs. Smith and Stenner were members of the team that contributed to the Common Core State Standards, which nearly all states have adopted.

Because the Common Core State Standards call on students to read increasingly complex text it is important to learn about the factors that make text complex for readers.  Learning about these factors and the scale that is used to measure them is a powerful way to help young people achieve the ambitious new standards.  Having the opportunity to hear from Dr. Smith, a renowned expert in this field, is very exciting.
