This Saturday (March 9) is the annual FACE (Faith Action for Community Equity) Equity Summit.
The event is free to the public and will be held at the UH Shidler school of Business. You are welcome to attend all or any of it, but if you are planning on joining us for lunch please call the FACE office, 522-1304, by Wednesday afternoon so we have a count.
Registration and sign in are in front of auditorium room A101 which is also where the opening remarks will happen. The other rooms will be assigned there.

Hawaii needs a Raise: Minimum Wage Bill
Speakers: the National Employment Law Project, the Hawaii AFL-CIO, and the State Department of Labor.
This workshop will discuss the reasons for raising the minimum wage, and talk about how this positively effects the local economy. It will include next steps for this campaign.
Immigration Reform: Comprehensive Reform in 2013?
Speakers: Maile Hirota, President of the Hawaii Immigration Law Association, Kevin Block, Director of Immigrant Services Maui County; Jeff Acido, UH Board of Regents; Carolina Torresvalle, UH student
This workshop will discuss the chances for a comprehensive reform bill passing this year, look at the elements that are currently proposed for that bill, and strategize local action steps.

Listen to the Teachers! What is missing in the struggle for Education Reform
Speakers: Dr. Clifton Tanabe, UH professor, Corey Rosenlee, Campbell HS teacher and leader of the work to rule effort, Susan Kay Anderson, Pahoa HS teacher and Civil Beat contributor
FACE conducted the Hawaii Teacher Listening Campaign since summer of 2012. Dr. Tanabe will share his findings and recommendations to give voice to Hawaii’s teachers. Teacher leaders will speak about teaching conditions in today’s schools and their efforts to improve education for students and teachers.Long term Care!

Long term care is a big issue in Hawaii – It is a strong value in our islands to care for family in the home, and our state has more elderly living at home with family members than any other. Yet time and again long term care reforms (the insurance program, and the refundable tax credit) have gone down to gubernatorial vetoes. Now another effort at addressing this problem is gathering steam, what are it’s chances?

We have fought for years to make the rail happen based on the chance to get more affordable housing, now we need to be sure that we get what we asked for. This workshop will look at this issue and use proposed redevelopment at Mayor Wrights as an example.

Hawaii’s newest immigrants: Organizing issues and community
Speakers: Veronica Teico, FACE Maui
The Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall islands, and the Republic of Palau all enjoy special status with the United States and Hawaii has seen an influx of immigrants from these islands. This special session is a planning meeting for leaders from several quarters to address the upcoming renegotiation of the treaty in 2015, as well as looking at practical strategies for improving the material conditions for migrants in the Aloha state.
Participation is limited, and must be arranged in advance.
